Overview
The Master of Sport Management (Extension) provides advanced insights into the operation of the sport industry, both in Australia and internationally. The course is designed to develop professional skills and knowledge to equip students for collaborative and leadership positions in the fast growing, increasingly complex sport sector. With this in mind, the program includes subjects that develop a critical understanding of sport management across the areas of business, globalisation, governance, marketing, media, development, technology, innovation, and social impact. Importantly, the course is designed for students from diverse backgrounds and delivered using flexible learning methods, making it suitable for working professionals as well as domestic and international students.
In comparison to the standard Master's course, the additional elective subject choices in the extension program provide an opportunity to specialise more deeply in sports management and related fields, and further enhance students' business skills, professional practice, specialist knowledge and capabilities.
Course aims
The Master of Sport Management (Extension) combines business literacy with sport-specific management learning. It provides theories, models and practical case studies in order to understand the complex nature of the sport industry. The course aims to produce graduates who:
- Are effective, collaborative and responsive professionals who are capable of managing, leading and inspiring in the field of sport management.
- Exhibit reflective critical thinking to optimise decision making and positive change through creative, evidence-based solutions.
- Take personal, social and ethical responsibility for their contribution to the sport industry.
- Acquire knowledge of methods to increase managerial performance and positive social impact through sport.
- Advance professional relationships through teamwork and engagement in a multi-faceted and diverse sport environment.
- Demonstrate cultural competency across a variety of sports and social settings.
Career options
Graduates may pursue careers in such fields as sport marketing, sport event management, venue and facility management, sports development, international relations, sports administration, sport media management and operations management.

Admission requirements
To be eligible for admission to this course, applicants must meet the following criteria.
Applicants must have the following:
- Completed Australian bachelor's degree or higher qualification, or overseas equivalent, with more than 75% of all subjects completed at pass level (conceded pass not included)
Applicants who do not meet the criteria above should consider applying for C07029 Graduate Diploma in Sport Management or C11037 Graduate Certificate in Sport Management.
The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL iBT: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64 with a writing score of 50; or C1A/C2P: 176-184 with a writing score of 169.
Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.
International students
Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.
Pathway course
Students who do not meet the requirements to gain entry into the Master of Sport Management (Extension) may be eligible for entry into the Graduate Certificate in Business Immersion and Career Transition (C11300). Satisfactory completion of the UTS Graduate Certificate allows students to articulate into the Master of Sport Management (Extension).

Recognition of prior learning
Students may be granted a maximum of six subject exemptions, of which four core subjects may be approved from prior undergraduate study. For more information about the application process, see How to Apply for Recognition of Prior Learning.
Course duration and attendance
The course may be completed in two years of full-time or four years of part-time study.
Course structure
Students must complete a total of 96 credit points made up of 15 subjects, comprising twelve core subjects (72 credit points), two electives subjects (12 credit points), and either Industry Research Project or Internship Experience (12 credit points).
