MAJ03541 Flexible Engineering
The flexible engineering major provides a pathway for students to design their own interdisciplinary engineering degree that is fully accredited by Engineers Australia. It also affords students who may be uncertain as to which area of engineering they wish to pursue an opportunity to sample different disciplines before transferring into a designated major (subject to meeting minimum academic requirements).
The completion requirements for the flexible engineering major include undertaking at least three discipline 'threads' or sub-majors to provide the necessary depth of knowledge, skills and application to the degree. A thread consists of a subject from the advanced option choice-block plus the required prerequisites. The advanced subject is typically a final-year subject from a designated major and is normally undertaken within the last three sessions of study. Alternatively, a sub-major could be selected to focus on a pre-packaged specialisation.
Students intending to transfer from the flexible engineering program to a designated major should follow the recommended course program for their intended major in their first year – this typically includes an introduction subject and some other discipline-related subjects. It is possible to undertake introduction subjects from different disciplines in the first year to assist in this decision. Students transferring to a designated major may have these completed studies credited as electives.
It is possible to include subjects from other majors, courses, faculties and institutions with the approval of the program coordinator.
