Description
Students completing this subject authentically participate in supervised professional practice placements under the guidance of experienced clinical educators. Students are required to attend practicums on- and off-campus to undertake their supervised clinical exercise physiology practice across various exercise settings including public or private hospitals and health services, commercial clinic or community-based settings, or via tele-practice. In this subject, students consolidate and advance their anatomical, pathophysiological, pathomechanical, and behavioural sciences knowledge and skills across a range of conditions (e.g., musculoskeletal, occupational, cardiorespiratory, metabolic, renal, cancer, neurological, and mental health). Students assess, prescribe, and deliver exercise to people across the full health spectrum to improve, maintain, or reduce the decline of health-related status and function. Emphasis is placed on developing the students’ abilities to integrate the knowledge, skills, principles of evidence-informed practice, clinical reasoning, ethical behaviours, and professional attributes that are necessary to function as an effective allied health care practitioner using a person-centred approach.

Teaching and learning strategies
This subject offers a blended learning teaching approach. The majority of your learning will be completed during your practicum placement (or Work Integrated Learning), where you will apply the theoretical knowledge gained through your earlier studies, including your AES undergraduate learning and experiences, to AEP professional practice. These practicum placements are required to meet the specifications of our governing body ESSA (Exercise & Sports Science Australia) to ensure you will meet the entry requirements for the ESSA accreditation as an AEP.
Throughout the subject your placement will provide you with an opportunity to consolidate and extend clinical assessment, prescription and delivery skills through completion of practicum hours at supervised exercise physiologist placements. Supervision will be provided by a suitably qualified health professional/s. You will be expected to record and also reflect on the knowledge, skills and experience gained during your placement/s and use those to develop your assessable tasks. Performance is monitored through a portfolio including assessment of your practicum performance (or clinical competence), reflective and evaluation practice and submission of ESSA accreditation documentation.
