Description

This subject requires students to explore nursing leadership in contemporary practice and the influences that have shaped its evolution from global and local perspectives. Students are asked to consider themselves as leaders and prepare for leadership. A clear expectation is established that all registered nurses, including new graduates, demonstrate leadership that contributes to the quality and safety of patient care and promotes an essential nursing perspective in interprofessional healthcare endeavours. Students develop an understanding that nursing leadership at all levels is critical to the sustainability and development of the profession. The subject motivates students to engage with their profession in a responsible and honourable way, develop a sense of constructive agency and ultimately positively influence the work lives of others.

Subject learning objectives (SLOs)

Upon successful completion of this subject students should be able to:
A. Analyse and evaluate the issues and factors that impact on nursing leaders and professional practice (RN Standards of Practice 1, 2 & 7)
B. Differentiate between selected theories, ideas and approaches to leadership in nursing practice and the distinction between leadership and management in nursing (RN Standards of Practice 1, 2 & 3)
C. Critically reflect upon the concepts and skills relevant to effective leadership aimed at optimising patient safety and a healthy workplace (RN Standards of Practice 1 & 7)
D. Explain clinical leadership expectations for beginning new graduate nurses including scope of practice and legal and ethical boundaries (RN Standards of Practice 5 & 6)
E. Apply reflective practice to analyse and evaluate strategies to develop personal and professional resilience important to effective leadership (RN Standards of Practice 1 & 3)
F. Explain the use of knowledge, evidence, communication and networks as supportive elements in effective leadership (RN Standards of Practice 2, 3, 6 & 7)

Teaching and learning strategies

In this subject, you will participate in a range of teaching and learning strategies that are designed to encourage you to engage with nursing leadership.

Lectures and online learning materials
This subject benefits from both the real time delivery of content and access to online resources including podcasts, videos and learning modules. Students are provided with the resources to complete approximately 60-90 minutes of preparatory work to enable engagement during online tutorials. Lecture material enables students to quickly clarify complex descriptions and terminology, and engage with nursing leaders who are experts in their field.

Tutorials
Students will be supported and guided by a tutor and also work in pairs and groups to unpack the tutorial content using case studies and real life examples. Class content is structured to contribute to the required assessment tasks. Students will be provided feedback from their tutor and peers with the opportunity to collaborate and develop interpersonal, communication and reflective skills.

Academic Writing
Demonstrating information literacy and technology skills, students search and synthesise the professional literature to support their discussion in online and written academic assessments. Students to comply with academic writing and academic integrity requirements to ensure their information is presented appropriately.

Assessment task 1: Quiz

Intent:

For students to demonstrate their understanding of selected theories, ideas and approaches to leadership in nursing practice and be able to apply this knowledge critically to answer a series of multiple choice and true/false questions.

Assessment task 2: Narrated PowerPoint OR Written Paper

Intent:

To explore historical nursing leaders’ values, attributes and their contribution to the nursing profession. This assessment will enable students to explore important leadership abilities and to incorporate this knowledge into their emerging professional identity.

Assessment task 3: Group Presentation

Intent:

To develop the ability to analyse and evaluate factors through reflecting on contemporary issues impacting nursing leaders and professional practice. This assessment will enable students to showcase their ability to critically reflect upon concepts relevant to effective leadership aimed at optimising patient safety and professional resilience and present them in a group with peers.
