Overview

The Bachelor of Psychology develops knowledge and skills in psychology to better understand the mind, brain and behaviour. Our psychology degrees have been designed in line with the latest Australian Psychology Accreditation Council and American Psychological Association guidelines, as well as the Australian Indigenous Psychology Education Project frameworks. This ensures that students receive cutting-edge and internationally relevant knowledge and skillsets that are highly valued by diverse employers. Students apply psychology to many of the biggest challenges currently faced by individuals and society, including climate change and sustainability, misinformation, cybersecurity, ageing populations, human-computer interaction, and change management.

The Bachelor of Psychology prepares students for diverse career pathways in the future workforce. This degree offers the first step towards becoming a registered psychologist* as well as transferable skills increasingly demanded by a range of employers. Graduates use psychology to better understand the mind, brain, and behaviour to solve challenges faced by individuals, groups, and society.

Course aims

This course is designed to equip graduates with broad and coherent knowledge and skills in the scientific discipline of psychology. Our graduates will fill the pressing need for a larger mental health workforce. Students gain transferable skills in preparation for jobs of the future that are focused on human-machine interaction, ageing, behavioural insights, data analysis, people management, leadership, neuroscience, and more. An Indigenous graduate attribute is woven throughout the course to ensure graduates are culturally responsive and well prepared to work with and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. These aims are achieved through collaboration with diverse industry partners, and the provision of innovative work-integrated learning and research opportunities.

Innovation and Transdisciplinary program

Transdisciplinarity and Innovation at UTS

All UTS students have the opportunity to develop distinctive capabilities around transdisciplinary thinking and innovation through the TD School. Transdisciplinary education at UTS brings together great minds from different disciplines to explore ideas that improve the way we live and work in the world. These offerings are unique to UTS and directly translate to many existing and emerging roles and careers.

Diploma in Innovation

The Diploma in Innovation (C20060) teaches innovation, supports personal transformation and provides the hard skills needed to support the inventors and inventions of the future. Students come out of the Diploma in Innovation, with the hard skills to create and support sectoral and societal transformation. Graduates are able to fluently integrate ideas, across professional disciplines and are inventors of the future.

All UTS undergraduate students (with the exception of students concurrently enrolled in the Bachelor of Creative Intelligence and Innovation) can apply for the Diploma in Innovation upon admission in their chosen undergraduate degree. It is a complete degree program that runs in parallel to any undergraduate degree. The course is offered on a three-year, part-time basis, with subjects running in 3-week long intensive blocks in July, December and February sessions. Transdisciplinary electives program

Transdisciplinary electives broaden students' horizons and supercharge their problem-solving skills, helping them to learn outside, beyond and across their degrees. Students enrolled in an undergraduate course that includes electives can choose to take a transdisciplinary subject (with the exception of students concurrently enrolled in the Bachelor of Creative Intelligence and Innovation). Course intended learning outcomes

1.1 Cultural Responsiveness: Identify knowledge and skills required for research and professional practice that is culturally responsive, and cognisant of the impacts of ongoing colonisation on the health and wellbeing of Indigenous Australians.
2.1 Psychological Literacy: Apply psychological knowledge and skills to personal, professional, and societal goals.
3.1 Research Proficiency: Use knowledge of research methods and appropriate technologies to interpret and communicate empirical evidence.
4.1 Lifelong Learning: Employ knowledge, skills, and attributes required for self-directed pursuit of scholarly inquiry in psychology and for ongoing personal and professional development.
5.1 Values and Ethics: Recognise the importance of values and ethical standards in psychological research and practice.
6.1 Interpersonal Skills: Demonstrate effective interpersonal and teamwork skills appropriate to psychological practice and research.
6.2 Professional Capacity: Analyse the theoretical underpinnings and application of psychological assessment and intervention across contexts.

Admission requirements

Applicants must have completed an Australian Year 12 qualification, Australian Qualifications Framework Diploma, or equivalent Australian or overseas qualification at the required level.

The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5, internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64 with a writing score of 50; or C1A/C2P: 176-184 with a writing score of 169.

Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.

International students

Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.

Recognition of prior learning

Recognition of prior learning will be granted on the basis of successful completion of equivalent subjects from an APAC-accredited Level 1 program in Psychology within the last 10 years.

Course duration and attendance

The Bachelor of Psychology is offered at the City campus on a full-time basis over three years and a part-time basis over six years.

Course structure

The course comprises a total of 144 credit points. Students must complete 60 credit points of core subjects, a 24 credit point sub-major, 54 credit points of free electives and 6 credit points of transdisciplinary electives.

Honours

Students may be eligible to apply for the Bachelor of Psychological Science (Honours) (C09170) which is an additional year of full-time study, or two years of part-time study.

Professional recognition

This course provides the first step (i.e., APAC Level 1 foundational competencies*) on the pathway towards becoming a professionally accredited psychologist. Students may be eligible to apply for an additional fourth year Honours program (i.e., APAC Level 2 pre-professional competencies) which is the second step on the pathway towards becoming a professionally accredited psychologist.
