Description

Students completing this subject authentically participate in supervised professional practice placements under the guidance of experienced clinical educators. Students are required to attend practicums on- and off-campus to undertake their supervised clinical exercise physiology practice across various exercise settings including public or private hospitals and health services, commercial clinic or community-based settings, or via tele-practice. In this subject, students consolidate and advance their anatomical, pathophysiological, pathomechanical, and behavioural sciences knowledge and skills across a range of conditions (e.g., musculoskeletal, occupational, cardiorespiratory, metabolic, renal, cancer, neurological, and mental health). Students assess, prescribe, and deliver exercise to people across the full health spectrum to improve, maintain, or reduce the decline of health-related status and function. Emphasis is placed on developing the students’ abilities to integrate the knowledge, skills, principles of evidence-informed practice, clinical reasoning, ethical behaviours, and professional attributes that are necessary to function as an effective allied health care practitioner using a person-centred approach.

Subject learning objectives (SLOs)

Upon successful completion of this subject students should be able to:

Apply, integrate, and adapt knowledge and skills for prescribing exercise to people across the full health spectrum, with a focus on clinical treatment for people with complex and chronic conditions and co-morbidities to improve, maintain, or reduce the decline of health-related status and function.
2. Apply appropriate screening, risk management strategies, and behaviour change principles to safely create, prescribe, implement, and evaluate effective interventions for people with complex, chronic conditions and co-morbidities to optimise health outcomes within relevant legislative frameworks.
3. Apply evidence-informed practice and professional decision-making to optimise person-centred care across complex and chronic conditions and co-morbidities.
4. Effectively and respectively communicate with clients and other relevant professionals that results in shared decision-making through collaborative and interprofessional clinical exercise physiology practice.
5. Engage with ongoing personal and professional self-development and reflective practice as it pertains to clinical exercise physiology practice.
6. Demonstrate professional leadership through advocacy and socially-responsible, legal, and ethical behaviour that is safe, respectful, inclusive, and responsive to people of diverse backgrounds and populations.
