Current accredited NSW High School Teachers, with knowledge of STEM subjects.

Description

This subject is for current NSW high school STEM teachers seeking to gain skills and knowledge for teaching delivery of Stage 6 Engineering Studies

This subject is conducted online with interactive sessions and self-paced online learning. The subject includes theoretical knowledge and concepts of engineering manufacturing, materials, electrical, mechanical processes and communication. Face to face teaching takes place for practical activities such as engineering drawing, materials testing, developing CAD and 3D printing skills.

Subject learning objectives (SLOs)

Upon successful completion of this subject students should be able to:

1. Create a scope and, sequence, lesson plans and program for Stage 6 Engineering Studies. (C.1)
2. Explain concepts and principles in Stage 6 Engineering Studies. (D.1)

Course intended learning outcomes (CILOs)

This subject also contributes specifically to the development of the following Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs):

  • Design Oriented: FEIT graduates apply problem solving, design thinking and decision-making methodologies in new contexts or to novel problems, to explore, test, analyse and synthesise complex ideas, theories or concepts. (C.1)
  • Technically Proficient: FEIT graduates apply theoretical, conceptual, software and physical tools and advanced discipline knowledge to research, evaluate and predict future performance of systems characterised by complexity. (D.1)

Teaching and learning strategies

STEM Teacher Acceleration – Engineering Studies is specifically for current qualified high school teachers with STEM knowledge, wishing to branch into delivering Stage 6 Engineering Studies courses.
The bulk of the delivery of this subject will be interactive online sessions and self-paced online learning. There will also be a couple of on campus sessions for demonstrations for practical components. There will be pre-reading materials for participants to complete to enhance the learning experiences throughout the course.

The online components will focus on theoretical knowledge and concepts of engineering manufacturing, materials, electrical, mechanical processes and communication. Concepts are presented through the Canvas LMS using a range of mediums such as PowerPoints, high-quality videos, interactive teacher demonstrations, student led research tasks and practice quizzes.

This subject will consist of two tracks: a foundation track will be suitable for teachers with some related knowledge which will facilitate teachers in delivering the Preliminary Engineering Studies. The second track will be an advanced track, being a deep dive into Engineering Studies which will facilitate teachers in delivering the HSC Engineering Studies course.

Each module contains practice quiz/exercises to test knowledge and deepen understanding. Discussions will be held using an online discussion board in Canvas and breakout rooms via Teams. Participants will share their developed projects with other participants for peer-assessment to develop ‘student-led’ learning opportunities. Formative Assessment will be completed through submissions on Canvas in the form of extended questioning and problem-solving tasks to strengthen participants technical knowledge. Face to face teaching will take place for practical activities such as engineering drawing, developing CAD and 3D printing skills.

Content (topics)

Participants will complete learning activities in 3 application modules (Engineering Fundamentals, Engineered Products, Braking Systems) and 1 focus module (Biomedical Engineering).
