Description

Students undertake original research, supervised by a senior member of the school's academic staff. Students prepare a proposal, present it and gain approval before proceeding. The thesis should advance knowledge in the area of business research and be of a standard publishable in an international refereed journal.

Subject learning objectives (SLOs)

Upon successful completion of this subject students should be able to:
1. Critically evaluate existing academic literature and apply critical and innovative thinking to address major research issues in business disciplines
2. Convey research clearly and fluently, in high-quality form appropriate for academic and/or professional audiences
3. Lead research which respects participants, the wider community and the environment
4. Integrate research theories, principles and skills and apply them to make meaningful contributions to the advancement of relevant academic and professional disciplines
5. Consider the implications of research in relation to Indigenous peoples and communities in Australia

Content (topics)

The program usually requires three to four years to complete.
Typically, the first year is spent on coursework determined in conjunction with their principal supervisor and the refinement of the proposal, to complete the assessment for Stage 1 of the PhD. In year two and three, students are required to undertake original research resulting in a thesis, typically incorporating two to three publishable research papers. Their progress is assessed in following two additional assessment presentations and paper submissions, approx. at the end of year 2 and 3 respectively.
