Description

This subject provides the foundational background on blockchain and its applications, in the specific context of financial market design and operation. It covers basic software architecture of blockchain, and operational architecture of blockchain platforms. It covers open, public blockchains and permissioned blockchains and distributed ledgers, and their applications in the context of market design. The subject covers representation of digitised assets as tokens on different blockchains and discusses distributed vs decentralised transaction processing, and the implication for the design and operations of future markets.

Subject learning objectives (SLOs)

Upon successful completion of this subject students should be able to:
1. Explain fundamental concepts of distributed ledger technology and digital assets
2. Discuss the characteristics, advantages, and limitations of these technologies in digital finance
3. Discuss how choices about technology in digital finance relate to topics in finance and law
4. Critically evaluate high-level designs of technology systems proposed to solve constrained problems in digital finance
