Description

The primary intent of this subject is to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to both plan and deliver events of various types and scale, and to critique current practice. This subject deals with the festival and special event project management process. This process involves a series of sequential steps, specifically: initiation, planning, implementation, employment of control and monitoring systems, and evaluation and legacy management. In discussing these steps, those factors that act to condition how they are undertaken are addressed, including considerations linked to ethical and socially responsible business practice.

Subject learning objectives (SLOs)

Upon successful completion of this subject students should be able to:
1. Discuss and employ the event project management process in the context of a wide range of event forms
2. Identify and describe the significance of contextual factors impacting the planning and delivery of selected events
3. Develop written and oral communication skills and teamwork by jointly conceptualising and planning a new event
4. Critically analyse case study data relating to the management of specific events

Contribution to the development of graduate attributes

This subject aligns with the graduate attribute of communication and collaboration.

In this subject, teaching and learning activities will introduce students to concepts, processes, and tools related to event management. The subject assessments are then based on applying the learnings to real-world contexts. Students are asked to effectively communicate a critical analysis of an existing event and make convincing suggestions for improvement. Students also develop oral and written communication and collaboration skills in jointly planning an event and communicating the plan in report form.

This subject also contributes specifically to the development of the following Program Learning Objective for the Bachelor of Management:

  • Develop effective communication skills to enable cogent knowledge transfer with colleagues to achieve productive project outcomes relevant to professional practice (2.1)

Teaching and learning strategies

This subject involves a variety of synchronous and asynchronous teaching and learning activities, which may include videos, directed readings, case studies, collaborative group work, self-assessment and peer-review tasks. Student discussions, both face to face and online, will be based on prescribed readings and other materials, including those focussing on current issues in the field.

Students are expected to read/watch, reflect on and critique the weekly materials, and complete other weekly activities set as preparatory work, in order to apply this learning in class.

Students will get feedback from the tutors during synchronous time, as well as peer and tutor feedback to their work online.
