Description

This subject requires students to reflect on a series of critical contemporary issues associated with sport business and/or management at local, national and international levels. Students examine the ethical, political, structural and policy dimensions of key problems in sport and society. It therefore allows students to relate critical sport business issues to a wider understanding of social life and community.

Subject learning objectives (SLOs)

Upon successful completion of this subject students should be able to:
1. integrate pre-existing knowledge to real world settings and case studies in sport business
2. apply understanding of critical issues in sport business
3. reflect on the reactions and responses of sport organisations in respect of professional practice
4. consider the future of sport business in the context of current events and trends

Contribution to the development of graduate attributes

This subject is aligned with the graduate attributes of professional and technical competence.

This subject applies skills and knowledge from previous subjects to the task of analysing current issues and events in sport. This involves emergent case studies, industry speakers, and collaborations with local practitioners. This requires students to reflect on previous learnings, such as marketing, management, and governance, applying these skills to real world scenarios. As students examine key social issues in sport and society, they further develop interpersonal skills, such as networking and public speaking.

This subject also contributes specifically to the development of the following Program Learning Objectives for the Sport Business Major in the Bachelor of Management:

  • Execute managerial capabilities and technical skills that are critical to professional practice in a specialised industry sector (4.1)

Teaching and learning strategies

The lecture/workshop format will incorporate a range of teaching and experiential learning strategies including videos, debates, innovative technology, and case studies. Guest lectures and collaborations with local practitioners will be a component of the program. Content for this subject will be supported by the UTS Learning Management System.
