Description

This subject provides an overview of the field of sustainable finance. It investigates environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues and the ways in which these can be addressed using financial instruments, a sustainable financial system and investment decisions that focus on sustainability. Current industry practice is analysed and incorporated into the underlying theories. The subject draws on the experience and expertise of senior academics and industry practitioners.

Upon successful completion of this subject students should be able to:
1. appraise the role of sustainable finance in making investment and financing decisions in organisations
2. apply critical analytical decision-making tools and techniques to the valuation of green finance instruments
3. evaluate the techniques applied to sustainability in financial decisions

Teaching and learning strategies

The subject will be taught in an interactive mode with a high level of student engagement and participation. The assessment tasks are designed to provide early and ongoing feedback.

Before class: Students will be provided with readings and preparation videos to prepare for class.

In class: Classes will be conducted as face-to-face seminars. Class-time will be used to present and discuss concepts, answer questions about subject materials, discuss case studies, and work through guided activities and workshop questions. The learning philosophy is to enable students to master the foundation concepts and apply them in real-world applications in a collaborative environment. The in-class discussions give students an opportunity to get feedback from the lecturer and their peers.

After class: Online weekly quizzes will be provided as individual assessments and accessed via the LMS. Students are expected to complete the quizzes during the allocated periods. They will receive timely feedback on the quizzes.
