Description
This subject supports students to undertake the preparatory work required to develop an honours thesis topic. Students develop the skills required to analyse and organise references in order to produce a final literature review. The overall aim of the subject is to ensure students gain the basic academic skills to organise the direction of a research project and use this knowledge to establish the scope of a research project.
The work completed in this subject enables students to fulfil the learning requirements of 11391 Research Methods, Information Retrieval and Project Proposal. The technical and academic knowledge and skills developed in this subject structures and positions the work necessary to assemble the research proposal in 11391.
Content (topics)
The content of this subject involves the development of the relevant knowledge and skills required in the preparation of an academic or professionally focused thesis topic. The subject content covers the following:
1. Established and innovative techniques of information retrieval.
2. Established and innovative methods in the analysis and organisation of references and resources.
3. The production of a literature review that defines the scope of a research proposal.

Assessment task 1: Extended Bibliography: Documentation of Preparative Work
Intent: | This task asks students to reflect on the activites involved in the preparation of a bibliography. In this instance the document must provide a detailed account of the preparatory work undertaken in the development of a bibliography on research methods. |

Length: | This assessment is split into two components. The presentation and critical evaluation of common and innovative retrieval methods should be no more than 2000 words. The bibliography should include no more than 25 referneces. The student, in consultation with the supervisor, will determine how best to represent this work. |
