Description

Numeracy teachers in all education sectors - primary, secondary and adult education - need confidence in their knowledge of the conceptual underpinnings of the mathematical ideas they are likely to be teaching. This subject aims to deepen pre-service and in-service teachers’ mathematical knowledge thereby building their confidence and a positive disposition to engaging in numeracy teaching. The subject focuses on selected topics in the areas of whole number, geometry and space, and measurements and estimation, rational number, patterns and algebra, data handling and probability. A multimodal pedagogy including digital, visual and artifactual resources is used to facilitate meaning-making of mathematical ideas in multiple ways. In the subject, pre-service teachers focus on an area that is most relevant to their own needs and professional practices in their assessment tasks.?They design and carry out mathematical investigations to extend their understanding of the selected topics.
