Description

This subject develops pre-service teachers' understanding of how to work mathematically in the teaching and learning of aspects of the NSW K-6 Mathematics syllabus. Pre-service teachers examine the construction of, and build, their own understandings of sound methodological principles for the development of concepts of rational numbers, percentage, geometry, patterns and algebra. Indigenous Australian mathematics knowledge is examined both to appreciate different mathematical knowledges that have developed in different cultures and to consider how Indigenous knowledges can be integrated into the teaching and learning of mathematics. Pre-service teachers learn to communicate mathematical ideas using appropriate mathematical terms and clear and explicit language for explanation and questioning and use language, images, symbols, resources including ICT as tools to design learning sequences and lesson activities to support school students’ mathematical learning. Pre-service teachers undertake unit planning for primary school students at different stages. Good teaching practice is modelled using hands-on collaborative tasks. This subject provides pre-service teachers with the opportunity to develop critical and reflective thinking about their mathematics teaching practice.
