Description

This subject is the first of two core subjects for pre-service teachers in mathematics. The subject develops pre-service teachers’ understanding of how to work mathematically in the teaching and learning of aspects of the NSW K-6 Mathematics syllabus. They learn the discipline content of the NSW Mathematics Curriculum: whole number, measurement, statistics and probability. Pre-service teachers are introduced to planning mathematics lessons appropriate for school students at different stages. Drawing on learning theories about primary aged students’ development of mathematical concepts and proficiencies, students learn to create powerful learning experiences for children studying the NSW Mathematics Curriculum K-6. Teaching and learning in the subject involves the modelling of participative and collaborative learning approaches. Pre-service teachers are encouraged to critically reflect on their own learning about, and teaching of, the NSW K-6 Mathematics syllabus. Assessment tasks require pre-service teachers to practise their teaching skills while on placement.
