This subject examines the policy implications of alternative market structures in health care. The subject covers a range of market structures including monopolies and oligopolies, monopolistic competition and monopsony and examine how such structures are a key determinant in driving supply-side responses to policy reforms and other market changes. Through an Industrial Organisation lens, students learn about the intended and unintended consequences of these responses. In doing so, the subject focuses on contemporary Australian health care trends including recent workforce changes, corporatisation and vertical integration.
