Overview

In today's interconnected world, a profound understanding of international relations is no longer just the remit of diplomats and policymakers. As companies, technologies and cultures increasingly intertwine, gaining insight into the intricacies of global diplomacy and geopolitics has become a crucial asset for professionals in business, public service, government, research and the humanitarian sector.

The UTS Online Master of International Relations is tailored for forward-thinking professionals seeking to acquire an advanced toolkit of knowledge and skills to address urgent global challenges and advance their careers within government, non-governmental organisations, and international business. The course provides opportunities for students to undertake comprehensive studies in diverse fields including global communication, cross-cultural strategies, foreign policy, geopolitics, sustainability, and international crime prevention.

The UTS Online Master of International Relations has been designed by leading academics and industry experts. Students can customise their learning journey and career prospects with a choice of specialisations in Business, Health, Strategic Communication, Sustainability, and Technology Management, or select elective subjects from across these areas.

Students also develop higher-order skills in research design and methods through the Research Design and Methods in International Relations subject and apply these skills to real-world situations through the International Relations Applied Research Project.

Graduates are well-positioned to make positive contributions to the world, utilising their advanced skills and knowledge to tackle complex global challenges.

The course has been designed with career outcomes in mind, preparing students for careers in a range of settings, including government, international organisations, non-governmental organisations, and the private sector. Admission requirements

Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised bachelor's degree, or an equivalent or higher qualification, or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrates potential to pursue graduate studies.

For applicants with a bachelor's degree, the degree must be in the ASCED Field of Education group of 08 Management and Commerce, 09 Society and Culture, or 10 Creative Arts.

For applicants with a bachelor's degree in any other discipline, a minimum of two years of relevant work experience is required. Relevant work experience is defined from within the ANZSCO Groups 01 Managers or 02 Professionals AND demonstrated through a CV and Statement of Service confirming the dates of employment and the position held within the organisation. If applicants do not submit these documents, their application may not be considered.

For applicants with a doctoral, master's, graduate diploma or graduate certificate qualification, the degree can be in any field of education.

The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5, internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64 with a writing score of 50; or C1A/C2P: 176-184 with a writing score of 169.

Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.

International students

Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.

Recognition of prior learning

Students who have successfully completed subjects from C11374 Graduate Certificate in International Relations are eligible for recognition of prior learning for completed subjects.

Course duration and attendance

This course can be completed in a minimum of 2 years of online study, 1 x 6 credit point subject (or equivalent) per session over 12 x 7-week teaching sessions.


Studying more than 6 credit points a session is not recommended and subject to Faculty approval.

The course comprises a total of 72 credit points consisting of nine core and three elective subjects.
