Medical Science is a sector known for ongoing innovation. The UTS Master of Medical Science Leadership prepares students to lead future innovations and emerging changes. It develops leadership and professional skills, and covers contemporary practices, research advances and emerging trends and technologies within Medical Science globally. The program is for individuals seeking career progression within the field and those looking to gain up-to-date knowledge about the latest innovations across policy, practice, project and people management.

Fully online delivery in accelerated mode provides opportunity for medical science professionals nationwide to further their education while they navigate professional and personal commitments.

Course intended learning outcomes

1.1 Critically appraise and apply advanced skills and knowledge to contribute to professional practice, leadership and scholarship relevant to medical science contexts.
2.1 Assess, argue for, and conduct appropriate independent research to solve complex problems contributing to a field of work or learning to address medical or health research needs.
3.1 Develop, prepare, and engage in work and leadership practices adhering to health and safety requirements, ethical conduct, risk management, organisation, and governance or regulatory requirements in the context of medical science.
4.1 Reflexively determine the value, integrity, and relevance of multiple sources of information and engage with abstract concepts to derive innovative solutions to complex medical science problems.
5.1 Independently and collaboratively present and communicate complex ideas and justifications using appropriate communication approaches from a variety of methods (oral, written, visual and digital) to communicate with discipline experts, health and medical professionals, consumers, scientists, industry, and the community.
6.1 Critically reflect on Indigenous Australian contexts to inform professional cultural capability to work effectively with and for, Indigenous Australians within medical science and leadership.

Admission requirements

Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised bachelor's degree, or an equivalent or higher qualification, or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrates potential to pursue graduate studies.

It is a requirement that the degree be in a relevant Science or Health discipline, such as biological and health sciences, natural and physical sciences (with relevance), health, allied health, or medical sciences or another comparable field. The list of acceptable fields can be found on the UTS Online website.

Applicants who do not meet the above criteria may be considered on the following:

  • A minimum of three (3) years professional work experience*; AND
  • A general capacity to undertake tertiary education**; AND
  • An interview, where required by the Faculty

*Relevant work experience is defined at ANZSCO skill level 1 (commensurate with a bachelor's degree or higher qualification) and is demonstrated through a CV or a Statement of Service outlining work experience and the dates of employment and position(s) held within the organization, demonstrating extensive work as a manager or professional, and the applicant’s ability to critically appraise their work.

**General capacity to undertake tertiary education is demonstrated through a one-page Personal Statement outlining the applicant’s interest in the course and any contemporary professional education undertaken. The statement must clearly articulate the applicant’s learning expectations which align with the course intended outcomes and demonstrate capacity to undertake the course (such as, but not limited to, successful completion of UTS postgraduate microcredentials).

The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.5; or TOEFL: internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 24; or AE6: Pass; or PTE: 58-64 overall with a writing score of 58; or C1A/C2P: 176-184 overall with a writing score of 176.

International students

Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.

Course duration and attendance

The course is offered on a two years, full-time basis. (i.e., 1 x 6 credit point subject per session over 12 x 7-week sessions).

Approval to study more than six credit points per session will be subject to Faculty approval.

Course structure

The course comprises a total of 72 credit points and consists of a combination of nine compulsory core subjects (totalling 54 credit points) and three elective subjects (totalling 18 credit points).
