Overview
The UTS Graduate Certificate in Public Engagement in Medical Science is an advanced program designed to enhance community-centric scientific approaches. It prepares graduates to successfully translate medical science outcomes into the public sphere by building advanced scientific experience and complementing it with rich community consultation skills.
Students undertake subjects that expand their existing knowledge and experience, covering topics including communicating science, public engagement, social perspectives, and policy development. Graduates become valued people-focused scientific experts, communicators, and advocates for organisations and communities who drive better connections between scientific innovations, public and private organisations, and the general community.

Course intended learning outcomes
1.1 | Critically appraise and apply medical science knowledge and skills to align with scientific and community needs. |
2.1 | Assess and evaluate appropriate approaches to research and solve problems to address medical science and community needs. |
3.1 | Develop, prepare, and engage in work practices demonstrating awareness of ethical conduct and community engagement practices in the context of medical science. |
4.1 | Critically reflect upon the processes used to determine the value, integrity, and relevance of multiple sources of information to consider solutions to medical science problems. |
5.1 | Communicate complex medical science ideas and justifications using relevant approaches from a variety of methods (oral, written, digital and visual) to work for, and with, the community. |
6.1 | Evaluate Indigenous Australian contexts to inform professional cultural capability to work effectively with and for, Indigenous Australians within medical science. |
Admission requirements
To be eligible for admission to this course, applicants must meet the following criteria.
Applicants must have one of the following:
- Completed Australian bachelor's degree or higher qualification, or overseas equivalent, in a relevant Science or Health discipline, such as biological and health sciences, natural and physical sciences (with relevance), health, allied health, or medical sciences or another comparable field. The list of acceptable fields can be found on the UTS Online website.
OR
- A minimum of 3 years full-time, or equivalent part-time, relevant professional experience AND A general capacity to undertake tertiary education, demonstrated by successful completion of professional education (e.g. UTS microcredential(s) or equivalent)
Applicants may also be required to attend an interview.
Supporting documentation to be submitted with the application
For applicants who need to demonstrate work experience:
- Curriculum Vitae AND Statement of service in one of the following formats:
- A 'Statement of Service' provided by the employer
- A completed 'UTS statement of service’ signed by the employer
- A statutory declaration confirming work experience (for Australian Residents only)
- An official letter from the applicant’s accountant or solicitor on their company letterhead confirming the applicant’s work experience or engagement with the business, duration of operations, and the nature of the business
- A business certificate of registration in original language and English (e.g. provision of ASIC documentation or ABN or similar documentation for Australian Businesses)
For applicants who need to demonstrate interest in the course:
- Personal statement (one page) outlining the applicant’s interest in the course and any contemporary professional education undertaken. The statement must clearly articulate the applicant’s learning expectations which align with the course intended outcomes and demonstrates capacity to undertake the course (such as, but not limited to, successful completion of UTS postgraduate microcredentials).
The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.5; or TOEFL: iBT: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 24; or PTE: 58-64 overall with a writing score of 58; or C1A/C2P: 176-184 overall with a writing score of 176.
Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.
International students
Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.
Recognition of prior learning
Students in the Graduate Certificate in Public Engagement in Medical Science are not granted exemptions for any prior studies.
Course duration and attendance
The course is offered on an eight months, full-time basis. (i.e., 1 x 6 credit point subject per session over 4 x 7-week sessions).
Approval to study more than six credit points subject per session will be subject to Faculty approval.
Course structure
The course comprises a total of 24 credit points and consists of four compulsory core subjects.
