Description

In this subject students undertake a short research investigation under the supervision of a member of academic staff. Students contribute, in collaboration with their UTS supervisor and where appropriate an industry or external co-supervisor, to formulate the scope of the research project, including planning the research work. Students are responsible for writing the proposal, carrying out the work, including appropriate and critical analysis of the data or information obtained, writing up the findings as a manuscript which may be eligible for publication, and presenting the research plan and outcomes to a research audience. The manuscript typically includes an introduction to the project, a description of the methods used, a description of the results obtained plus any analysis undertaken and a discussion of the results in the context of the relevant literature.

Contribution to the development of graduate attributes

This is an elective subject in the Master of Pharmacy degree provides students with first-hand research experience. It extends the research skills gained in year 1 as part of 96007 Drug Disposition and 96008 Evidenced-Based Practice and facilitates an in-depth understanding in a specific area of through a research project. Students hoping to undertake further postgraduate research degrees are encouraged to complete Research Projects A & B.

Content (topics)

This subject follows the process of conceiving and designing a research project. The topics of focus are the initial steps required before starting a project, including formulating a research question, methodology, research design, risk assessment, and ethical considerations. Analysis and reporting are also addressed.

Assessment task 1: Oral Presentation

Intent:

Explaining a research project to informed peers is a fundamental part of the scientific method.

Students are required to present their project and take questions from peers.

Assessment task 2: Manuscript

Intent:

The customary way to disseminate research outcomes is by publication. Students are required to report their research in a form fit for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Supervisors work with their student to correct drafts and guide the process.

As specified in the Instructions to Authors for the targeted journal. Students must follow all instructions to authors. It is the supervisor’s responsibility that the manuscript length is reasonable and appropriate for the task.

Assessment task 3: Supervisor Assessment and Sign Off

Intent:

Research is a collaborative undertaking, requiring high-level teamwork and communication skills. The supervisor assessment rewards students for effective collaboration with their supervisor and other stakeholders.
