Description

This subject explores the conceptualisation and execution of exhibition design: the end of year show. Students acquire profound understanding of the fundamental principles and practical processes involved in exhibition design through spatial planning, thematic development, audio visuals, lighting, graphic design, and storytelling. It is advised that the final year graduating students enrol.

Subject learning objectives (SLOs)

On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:

1. Delineate the necessary requirements for setting an exhibition.
2. Gain knowledge for the different types of exhibitions strategies and methods of execution.
3. Acquire the elemental skills for preparing an exhibition.
4. Prepare a collective exhibition show.

Course intended learning outcomes (CILOs)

This subject also contributes to the following Course Intended Learning Outcomes:

  • Work cooperatively and professionally as part of a team (C.1)
  • Communicate ideas professionally and effectively through a variety of mediums: oral, written, visual, physical and digital (C.2)
  • Display leadership qualities throughout the production and delivery of the project (C.3)
  • Produce inspirational responses that demonstrate the successful integration of sub-disciplinary areas of knowledge: history, theory, tectonics and/or practice (I.1)
  • Creatively use architectural media, technologies and materials (I.2)

Contribution to the development of graduate attributes

The term CAPRI is used for the five Design, Architecture and Building faculty graduate attribute categories where:

C = communication and groupwork

A = attitudes and values

P = practical and professional

R = research and critique

I = innovation and creativity

Course intended learning outcomes (CILOs) are linked to these categories using codes (e.g. C-1, A-3, P-4, etc.).

Teaching and learning strategies

Weekly on campus: 1.5 hrs lecture, 1.5 hrs workshops

The subject will consist of weekly lectures in combination with onsite workshops. The lectures will be structured to present methods, as well as precedents that will serve as the guiding principle for elaborating a design. The workshops will offer support in the design process.

Collaborative Learning

UTS staff believe that collaborative peer learning enhances learning. Throughout the semester, work will be conducted in groups that will be organised based on individual skill sets.

The subject provides a range of formative feedback strategies.

1. All assessments will be graded in Canvas.

2. The subject is designed around the progressive development of two assessment tasks. The weekly workshops will guide the groups in the development of the tasks. Participation in class is encouraged.

Content (topics)

This course focuses on the basics for exhibition design. It discusses ideas for generating a brief, engaging an audience, working with an existing site, exhibition strategies, representation skills, graphics, lighting, materials and construction.

Assessment

Assessment task 1: Exhibition Concept Design

Intent:

The intent of this assessment is to put into practice the theory learned so far through the lecture. The goal is to produce initial concepts for a final project exhibition.

Objective(s):

This task addresses the following subject learning objectives:

1, 2 and 3

This task also addresses the following course intended learning outcomes that are linked with a code to indicate one of the five CAPRI graduate attribute categories (e.g. C.1, A.3, P.4, etc.):

C.2, I.1 and I.2

Type: Mid-session examination
Groupwork: Group, individually assessed
Weight: 50%
Criteria:

This is a group project graded individually based on the assigned roles per group. Each group will present their design concept with a 10 minute presentation followed by questions and discussion. The concept should address the issues discussed in class for formulating a narrative, engaging the audience, present a clear exhibition design strategy (path, lighting, materials and interaction) through 2D and 3D representations of the idea.

Assessment task 2: Final Exhibition

Intent:

The purpose of this final assessment is to demonstrate the practical capacity of setting up an exhibition using all the available tools taught in class.

Objective(s):

This task addresses the following subject learning objectives:

1, 3 and 4

This task also addresses the following course intended learning outcomes that are linked with a code to indicate one of the five CAPRI graduate attribute categories (e.g. C.1, A.3, P.4, etc.):

C.1, C.2, C.3, I.1 and I.2

Type: Project
Groupwork: Group, individually assessed
Weight: 50%
Criteria:

Collectively, the whole class will work on one chosen design concept and execute the preparation and opening of an End of Year Show. Grades will be assesed individually based on assigned tasks and demonstrating the ability to perform the task in coordination with the rest of the team.

Minimum requirements

The DAB attendance policy requires students to attend no less than 80% of formal teaching sessions (lectures and tutorials) for each class they are enrolled in to remain eligible for assessment.
