Description

This subject enables students to extend the knowledge foundations acquired in first session by gaining hands-on experience while performing different IT role(s) in different teams or areas (such as business analysis, development, testing, support, etc.) of the sponsoring organisation. This subject provides students with their first formal experience in the IT industry, making use of the skills and knowledge gained in their first session of study. In this process, students learn to link and apply theory to practice.

Subject learning objectives (SLOs)

Upon successful completion of this subject students should be able to:

1. Advance their theoretical knowledge of their chosen topic of study by working through real-life industry-based problems
2. Relate and integrate their theoretical knowledge to industry practice.

This subject also contributes specifically to the development of the following Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs):

  • Technically Proficient: FEIT graduates apply abstraction, mathematics and discipline fundamentals, software, tools and techniques to evaluate, implement and operate systems. (D.1)

Content (topics)

The study topic should be chosen in consultation with the student’s Project Manager and the University mentor. In general topics chosen that are of value to the sponsor should be chosen, but the student is free to chose any IT topic as long as both the Project Manager and the University mentor agree. Students should be aware of any commercially sensitive material that they may have access to or discover.

Topics can be drawn from: business benefits of IT, business processes, information system design methods, information system usability, or particular technologies used during their industry semester.
The actual project will be determined by the work/projects available and the information technology environment at a particular site.

Assessment

Assessment task 1: Journal and Reflection Report

Intent:

Industry project report is a reflective component and includes: what was learnt, how was it learnt, how did it benefit to you, and specific issues identified in industry placement such as communication problems, workplace behaviour and requirements etc.
