Description

This subject provides students with an opportunity to gain practical experience in the field of digital finance through an industry research project. Students are placed with an industry partner in order to conduct research, in a commercial setting, on a project related to digital finance. Besides the industry placement, students receive teaching and guidance from guest lectures, who share their industry expertise, insights and experiences. The subject coursework is designed to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to undertake their research project, including how to design relevant research questions, how to present research outcomes, and the commercialization of research outputs.

Subject learning objectives (SLOs)

Upon successful completion of this subject students should be able to:
1. Justify the need for research into industry-related problems
2. Critically evaluate the literature relevant to the project and research problem at hand
3. Effectively analyse primary research data using an appropriate methodology and technique
4. Formulate and critically evaluate conclusions from the data analysis
5. Communicate research process, analysis and conclusions in a professional industry-standard manner

Contribution to the development of graduate attributes

This subject contributes to the degree by giving students the opportunity to gain industry experience and carry out applied research on a topic related to digital finance. Students will work independently under the guidance and supervision of an industry partner and a research active academic. The knowledge and skills attained are expected to enable students to carry out rigorous and independent research to gain in-depth knowledge of the subject matter for their future career development. Students also develop oral and written communication competencies via the preparation of a research report and the oral presentation of the research outcomes.

This subject contributes to the development of the following graduate attribute(s):

  • Intellectual rigour and innovate problem solving.
  • Communication and collaboration.
  • Social responsibility and cultural awareness.
  • Professional and technical competence

Teaching and learning strategies

Students will work independently under the guidance and supervision of a research-active academic staff member and the industry partner, who will provide feedback along the way. Students may have to complete readings before in-class sessions for effective in-class discussion. Students will present their research outcomes in class to obtain feedback and promote the exchange of ideas, and to promote the effective communication of an industry project. On completion, students will also submit a written research report of the industry project they have been working on.
