Description

This subject invites students to apply a futures thinking lens and practices to critically examine the big question ‘what is a future worth wanting?’ By investigating the evolution of the environmental, socio-cultural and technological aspects of a complex challenge, students probe the underlying conceptions behind how the world has been made and could be made differently.

Students work in multidisciplinary teams and apply futuring and foresight approaches from a range of disciplines and professions to respond to an industry/community partner brief. First, they apply analytic futuring techniques to conduct research into the challenge space and anticipate predictive visions of the future. Then, students critique their findings and play with alternative scenarios to generate different future possibilities. After examining the range of new possibilities, students identify transformative pathways towards more ethical and regenerative futures and articulate a proposal for futures worth wanting. In doing so, students further their journey towards becoming critically engaged professionals, futures thinkers, and citizens.
