This subject builds on the knowledge and skills gained in the first and second year clinical subjects to extend students’ critical thinking and clinical reasoning abilities in caring for more complex patients. The subject focuses on the complexity of managing patients with acute and chronic conditions. The importance of comprehensive health assessment is particularly emphasised together with well-targeted nursing interventions, appropriately planned nursing care and the application of best evidence to practice. There is a focus on the ability of students to identify and respond to a clinically deteriorating patients across the lifespan and to initiate and escalate care appropriately. Case studies and simulations are used to stimulate this learning based on the National Health Priority Area of injury as well as sepsis.
