Enrolment in a Master of Science coursework degree or a postgraduate course is required for entry into this subject. Bachelor of Advanced Science students may be permitted to enrol in this subject pending space availability and the approval of the subject coordinator.


This subject provides an in-depth understanding of the theoretical principles of contemporary multi-laser flow cytometry. The subject covers the theoretical uses of light (including laser-excited fluorescence, band-pass filters and mirrors, diodes and photomultiplier tube for photon amplification and detection) and fluidics systems in analytical flow cytometers. Interactive lectures and tutorial sessions also review quality control, spectral analysis and cell sorting. The essential elements of imaging cytometry and mass cytometry are also covered. Practical aspects of sample preparation, cell staining techniques and biosafety issues are discussed with reference both to diagnostic and research uses of cytometry.

Practical class sessions provide students with an opportunity to generate their own flow cytometry data for subsequent analysis with industry-standard FlowJo software in computer data analysis classes. Having learned the basics of flow cytometry, students are then given the opportunity to design and perform their own unique flow cytometry experiment. Students analyse their own experimental data individually and learn how to generate a journal-style report. Reports that are graded at distinction level or above may be eligible to be published in the student-based Journal of Microscopy and Cytometry Experiments.
