This subject provides an introduction to the principles of operation and use of typical devices encountered in medical practice. Specific examples discussed include implantable devices (aspects such as biomaterials, biocompatibility and device design); oximeters; ECG, pacemaker; lasers; optical fibres; and selected applications of bionanotechnology. Common themes underlying specific examples are explored. Intrinsic to all measuring devices is the transduction process that converts physiological activity to a measured signal or image such as an electroencephalogram (EEG). Ethical, legal, social, cultural and economic impacts of the introduction of devices into medical practice are examined. Medical device regulatory frameworks are introduced and issues relating to the design and implementation of clinical trials are probed.
