This subject introduces the principles of operation and use of typical devices encountered in medical practice. Specific examples discussed include biomedical implants, devices for in vitro diagnostics, oximeters, medical lasers, microfluidic devices and selected applications of bionanotechnology for new generation of medical devices. Common themes underlying specific examples are explored. Ethical, legal, social, cultural and economic impacts of the introduction of devices into medical practice are examined. Medical device regulatory frameworks and medical device classification are introduced; and issues relating to the design and implementation of clinical trials are probed.
