This subject provides the theoretical cornerstone for the telecommunications thread in the course, as well as other areas like signal/image processing, and data engineering/analysis. Later telecommunications subjects rely heavily upon the mathematical groundwork and system framework of this subject. A strong laboratory component is emphasised in order to provide the student with exposure to a number of common telecommunication systems.
