This subject addresses the problems of managing and processing extremely large data sets in complex environments as a precursor for representing and sharing knowledge. It presents systematic approaches for complex data analysis and knowledge engineering via a contemporary web and modern information modelling approach. Topics include techniques that can be implemented on clusters of inexpensive computing nodes. Discussion and hands on exercises related to these topics will equip students to meet data analysis challenges in complex environments and appreciate the added challenges of dealing with unstructured data as a basis for representing and sharing knowledge. Additional challenges in heterogeneous IT environments are also examined. Students will be presented with opportunities to do hands-on work with appropriate commercial tools.
