This subject introduces students to the theory and practice of data management and the application of database software to manage an organisation's data and information and to support managerial and operational decision-making. Topics covered include relational data models, query languages, normalisation, concurrency control and data warehousing. The subject also addresses data science, big data, and business intelligence (BI), taking into account the business dimensions, imperatives and motivations that are associated with recent advances in technology and systems. The subject focuses on the use of relational database technology and students acquire hands-on experience with state-of-the-art database management systems.
