Description

This subject covers strategic approaches to construction project delivery and the leadership requirements for construction projects. The construction industry is increasingly facing social, economic, cultural, digital, artificial intelligence & problem-solving, and environmental challenges that require construction leaders who can inspire their teams and make a real change. The subject explores the different construction management approaches and leadership styles. It examines how the 'softer' leadership and strategic project skills, such as strategic vision, communication skills, charisma, personality, and business understanding, can be integrated with the construction project and business strategies to improve both construction project and business performance and outcomes. The importance of cross-cultural skills in a global construction project environment is also covered. Students are introduced to the concept of organisational project management (OPM), which aligns project deliverables with strategy. The subject also introduces lean construction as a project delivery strategy to raise awareness of lean practices in construction projects. Lean simulation games are used to supplement the lecture content and engage students at multiple levels, including understanding, analysing, evaluating, and applying lean concepts and principles.
