This subject focuses on the structures and conventions of the English language and how primary-aged children learn about and use language. It focuses particularly on reading in the early years through phonemic awareness. It introduces pre-service teachers to the key elements and principles of English grammar in relation to relevant curriculum requirements and explores the structure and organisation of language at the sentence, paragraph and whole text level. Pre-service teachers investigate how knowledge about language and texts develop primary-aged children’s capacities to read, write, listen and speak with confidence and precision appropriate to purpose, audience and context. They explore and contrast how written and spoken language differ, the relationship between meaning and grammar and how language use varies in a range of social contexts. Building on this, pre-service teachers learn strategies to teach vocabulary items, grammatical structures and a range of speaking, oral and writing tasks to primary-aged children. They investigate how to implement relevant syllabus documents through a range of teaching/learning strategies which strengthen and extend children’s composing and comprehending of spoken and written language. And pre-service teachers also identify and explore the role of assessment in the context of language learning in the primary school.
