010060 Student Learning in Higher Education

In this subject university teachers develop their understanding of key ideas on student learning and how those ideas relate to teaching in higher education. They are introduced to the concept that student approaches to learning are influenced by the learning environments they experience. Participants draw on insights from research to investigate the impact their current teaching practices on their students’ approaches to learning and make recommendations for changes to teacher- student engagement that can enhance students’ experiences of learning. The factors considered include the influence of student diversity in the classroom, prior knowledge and interest in the topic, and motivation and commitment to study. Participants are required to demonstrate that they have researched factors that pertain specifically to creating a safe and productive learning environment for Indigenous Australian students in their disciplinary area.
