STM90357 No specified major (Engineering)

The flexible engineering program (also known as 'no specified major') provides a pathway for students to design their own interdisciplinary engineering degree. It also affords students who may be uncertain as to which area of engineering they wish to pursue an opportunity to sample different disciplines before transferring into a designated major.

The completion requirements for the flexible engineering program includes undertaking at least three discipline 'threads' (24 credit points per thread) to provide the necessary depth of knowledge, skills and application to the degree. A 24-credit-point thread consists of an advanced subject from the 24-credit-point option block plus the required prerequisites (totalling at least 18 credit points) for the advanced subject. The advanced subject is typically a final-year subject from a designated major and is normally undertaken within the last two sessions of study.

Students intending to transfer from the flexible engineering program to a designated major should follow the recommended course program for their intended major in their first year – this typically includes an introduction subject and some other discipline-related subjects. It is possible to undertake introduction subjects from different disciplines in the first year to assist in this decision.

It is possible to include subjects from other majors, courses and faculties with the approval of the program coordinator.
