Overview

Sustainable practice is a priority across all facets of operations for industry, government, and non-profit organisations alike. The program builds skills and advanced knowledge of sustainability practice including policy, climate science, sustainable practices, and energy sources.

Students develop forward-looking and specialised knowledge to become valued, solutions-focused experts for organisations and communities focussed on increasing their sustainability.

Course intended learning outcomes

1.1 Critically appraise and apply advanced skills and knowledge relevant to sustainable practices.
2.1 Analyse data and information to design appropriate independent research to solve complex sustainability problems.
3.1 Develop, prepare, and engage in work practices demonstrating awareness of health and safety requirements, ethical conduct, risk management, organisation, and governance or regulatory requirements in the context of sustainability.
4.1 Critically reflect on their own and others' practices in relation to sustainable practices, seek and act on feedback to develop professional practice and learning.
5.1 Communicate complex ideas using various communication approaches from a variety of methods (oral, written, digital and visual) to broad audiences around sustainable practices.
6.1 Evaluate Indigenous Australian contexts to inform professional cultural capability to work effectively with and for, Indigenous Australians within sustainability.

Admission requirements

To be eligible for admission to this course, applicants must meet the following criteria.

Applicants must have one of the following:

  • Completed Australian bachelor's degree or higher qualification, or overseas equivalent in a relevant Science or Engineering discipline, such as physics, chemistry, environmental sciences, nursing, education, engineering, and/or materials sciences,. or another comparable field. The list of acceptable fields can be found on the UTS Online website.

OR

  • A minimum of 3 years full-time, or equivalent part-time, relevant professional experience AND A general capacity to undertake tertiary education, demonstrated by successful completion of professional education (e.g. UTS microcredential(s) or equivalent) AND An interest in the course and demonstrated understanding of the opportunities present in Sustainable Practice

Applicants may also be required to attend an interview.

Supporting documentation to be submitted with the application

For applicants who need to demonstrate work experience:

  • Curriculum Vitae AND Statement of service in one of the following formats:
    • A 'Statement of Service' provided by the employer
    • A completed 'UTS statement of service’ signed by the employer
    • A statutory declaration confirming work experience (for Australian Residents only)
    • An official letter from the applicant’s accountant or solicitor on their company letterhead confirming the applicant’s work experience or engagement with the business, duration of operations, and the nature of the business
    • A business certificate of registration in original language and English (e.g. provision of ASIC documentation or ABN or similar documentation for Australian Businesses)

For applicants who need to demonstrate interest in the course:

  • Personal statement (one page) outlining the applicant’s interest in the course and any contemporary professional education undertaken. The statement must clearly articulate the applicant’s learning expectations which align with the course intended outcomes and demonstrates capacity to undertake the course (such as, but not limited to, successful completion of UTS postgraduate microcredentials).

The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL iBT: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64 with a writing score of 50; or C1A/C2P: 176-184 with a writing score of 169.

Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.

International students

Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.

Recognition of prior learning

Students in the Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Practice are not granted exemptions for any prior studies.

Course duration and attendance

The course is offered on an eight months, full-time basis. (i.e., 1 x 6 credit point subject per session over 4 x 7-week sessions).

Approval to study more than six credit points subject per session will be subject to Faculty approval.

Course structure

The course comprises a total of 24 credit points and consists of four compulsory core subjects.
