Overview

The Graduate Certificate in Acute Care Nursing is a contemporary, accelerated and fully online program of study designed for Registered Nurses wanting to expand and future proof their specialist knowledge and professional capabilities in acute care nursing. The Graduate Certificate in Acute Care Nursing consists of four subjects: 96320 Specialty Clinical Practice, 96314 Evidence for Informing Practice, 96324 Nursing - Sensitive Indicators in Acute Care and 96315 Recognising and Responding to Acute Deterioration.

This course is aimed at students who wish to further develop their knowledge, skills and career in acute care nursing. Practitioners attracted to this course hold an approved Registration as a Nurse and work in a variety of acute care settings. These settings include hospital clinical areas such as high dependency units (step down from intensive care units), or acute care units/wards e.g. (medical surgical wards, cardiology, neurology stroke units, transplant units and other acute care nursing specialty areas). Students completing the course gain knowledge and industry experience during the course and can also articulate into the Masters of Advanced Nursing.

Course aims

This Graduate Certificate has been strategically co-designed by specialist content and learning design experts to develop graduates critical thinking skills and ability to evaluate and apply the best available evidence to their practice. The teaching team of advanced practice clinicians and educators challenge students to explore and critique key nurse sensitive indicators in the acute care setting as well as best practice relating to the early detection and management of deteriorating patients. Throughout the course, students share and reflect upon personal perspectives and experiences to develop the requisite skills to apply new knowledge relating to the principles, standards, frameworks and evidence that underpin contemporary acute care nursing practice.

Career options

The Graduate Certificate in Acute Care Nursing is targeted at Registered Nurses working in, or have ambitions to work in, an acute care health setting. These nurses are seeking to develop their capability in safe and effective, evidence-based advanced nursing care for patients with acute (i.e. rapid onset of severe illness or trauma) conditions who require urgent and/or intensive management.

Admission requirements

To be eligible for admission to this course, applicants must meet the following criteria.

Applicants must have the following:

  • Completed Australian bachelor's degree or higher qualification, or overseas equivalent, in Nursing AND Current registration as a registered nurse in Australia (AHPRA) AND Current employment as a registered nurse in a hospital-based setting (or have a letter of offer to commence employment as a registered nurse by commencement of study) AND A minimum of 1 year full-time, or equivalent part-time, post-registration clinical experience (nursing)

Supporting documentation to be submitted with the application

  • Curriculum Vitae AND Statement of Service in one of the following formats:
    • A 'Statement of Service' provided by the employer
    • A completed 'UTS statement of service’ signed by the employer
    • A statutory declaration confirming work experience (for Australian Residents only)
    • An official letter from the applicant’s accountant or solicitor on their company letterhead confirming the applicant’s work experience or engagement with the business, duration of operations, and the nature of the business
    • A business certificate of registration in original language and English (e.g. provision of ASIC documentation or ABN or similar documentation for Australian Businesses)

The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: IELTS Academic: 7.0 overall with a minimum score of 7.0 in each subset; or TOEFL: iBT: 94 overall, reading 24, listening 24, speaking 23, writing 27; or PTE: 65-72 overall with a minimum score of 65 in each subset; or OET: minimum score of B in each of the 4 components (listening, reading, writing and speaking).

Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.

International students

Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.

Recognition of prior learning

Recognition of prior learning for the Graduate Certificate in Acute Care Nursing is assessed on a case-by-case basis and in line with the UTS Admissions and Recognition of Prior Learning Policy.

Course duration and attendance

The course can be completed in a minimum of 8 months online study, 1 x 6 credit point subject (or equivalent) per session over 4 x 7-week sessions.

Course structure

Students must complete a total of 24 credit points.
