Overview

The Graduate Certificate in Nursing Education is an innovative, contemporary and accelerated program of fully online study designed for nurses who want to move beyond discipline specific ways of teaching and learning and experience education as transdisciplinary. Students have the opportunity to develop their teaching and learning knowledge and skills and the capacity to influence patient and education outcomes in their workplace.

Students learn with experienced clinicians, educators, academics and researchers from nursing and education disciplines. Upon successful completion of the Graduate Certificate in Nursing Education, students have the opportunity to progress to the Master of Advanced Nursing or the Master of Education (Learning and Leadership).

The Graduate Certificate in in Nursing Education offers students a highly customised program of study that encourages them to focus on issues that align with their learning priorities, interests, and the real-world challenges they face in their own work contexts. Consequently, they have the opportunity to build a robust toolkit of evidence-based knowledge and skills to enhance and innovate their teaching and learning practices. In doing so, students also develop the skills to lead and manage educational change and design and implement effective approaches to build evidence-based teaching and learning capacity in their workplace.

Course aims

The Graduate Certificate in Nursing Education is designed to develop students’ ability to:

  • Identify, synthesise, evaluate and apply the best available evidence to teaching and learning practices
  • Appraise and/or implement approaches for building evidence-based teaching and learning capacity and visionary leadership within the health care context
  • Demonstrate accountability for teaching and learning practices through the application of evidence based, social justice, ethical and cultural principles
  • Apply high-level communication and learner centred approaches to the teaching and learning context
  • Integrate new technologies effectively into teaching and learning practices
  • Demonstrate a commitment to excellence in lifelong learning and continuing professional development

Critically reflect on Indigenous Australian contexts to inform professional cultural capability to work effectively with and for, Indigenous Australians within the health and social care profession

Admission requirements

Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised bachelor's degree, or an equivalent or higher qualification, or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrates potential to pursue graduate studies.

The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5, internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64 with a writing score of 50; or C1A/C2P: 176-184 with a writing score of 169.

Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.

International students

Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.

Recognition of prior learning

Students will be eligible for 24 credit points (4 subjects) credited to the Master of Advanced Nursing or the Master of Education (Learning and Leadership) of recognition of prior learning.

Recognition of prior learning for the Graduate Certificate in Nursing Education is assessed on a case-by-case basis and in line with the UTS Admissions and Recognition of Prior Learning Policy.

Course duration and attendance

The course can be completed in a minimum of 8 months online study, 1 x 6 credit point subject (or equivalent) per session over 4 x 7-week sessions.

Course structure

Students must complete a total of 24 credit points.
