Overview

The Master of Business Analytics (Extension) is a unique transdisciplinary program of study in business analytics. With subjects drawn from UTS Business School, the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology and the TD School, students are provided with a course structure which fits their background and experience, as well as flexible specialisations to meet new needs and career interests. The course is delivered in blended mode, combining contemporary online and face-to-face learning experiences in UTS's leading-edge facilities.

The course is suitable for students from both business and IT backgrounds who seek to upskill and develop the skills required to meet the growth in emerging careers in business analytics.

Course aims

A unique feature of the Business Analytics program is the inclusion of studios, where students apply the technical skills they developed onto real-world projects.

Career options

Career options are incredibly varied as virtually every company in every industry now collects huge amounts of data that needs to be interpreted and analysed to inform decision-making. Graduates from this program are able to provide valuable insights on matters such as fraud detection, logistics optimisation, customer acquisition and retention, and demand forecasting.

Course intended learning outcomes

1.1 Appraise the assumptions implicit in data and apply analytical techniques to create innovative business solutions in a range of contexts
2.1 Communicate complex data-informed decisions clearly in written, verbal and visual form to a broad range business stakeholders
2.2 Collaborate with colleagues and a broad range of stakeholders to deliver negotiated outcomes
3.1 Critically evaluate various data practices and use these insights to improve analytical processes which drive positive and equitable outcomes
4.1 Integrate advanced data analysis techniques with business practices to deliver new insights that drive effective decision-making in a range of local and international contexts
5.1 Critically reflect on the rights to consent, privacy, data sovereignty and self determination to work ethically with and for Indigenous Australians as business analytics professionals

Admission requirements

To be eligible for admission to this course, applicants must meet the following criteria.

Applicants must have the following:

  • Completed Australian bachelor's degree or higher qualification, or overseas equivalent, in a related field of study with more than 75% of all subjects completed at pass level (conceded pass not included)

Related fields of study:

Accounting, Banking, Commerce, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Economics, Finance, Information Systems, Management, Marketing, Project Management or other related field of study (e.g. Engineering) with sufficient background in business, databases or computer programming

Applicants who do not meet the criteria above should consider applying for C11280 Graduate Certificate in Business Analytics.

The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL iBT: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64 with a writing score of 50; or C1A/C2P: 176-184 with a writing score of 169.

Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.

International students

Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.

Pathway course

Students who do not meet the requirements to gain entry into the Master of Business Analytics (Extension) may be eligible for entry into the Graduate Certificate in Business Analytics (C11280). Satisfactory completion of the graduate certificate allows students to articulate into the Master of Business Analytics (Extension).

Recognition of prior learning

Students in the Master of Business Analytics (Extension) are not granted exemptions for any prior studies.

Course duration and attendance

The course may be completed in two years of full-time or four years of part-time study.
