Overview

The Graduate Certificate in Business Analytics is a unique transdisciplinary program of study in business analytics. With subjects drawn from the UTS Business School and the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, students are provided a course structure that fits their background and experience. The course is delivered in blended mode, combining contemporary online and face-to-face learning experiences in UTS's leading-edge facilities. This course is designed to articulate into the Master of Business Analytics. In addition to the on-campus graduate certificate, UTS offers an online Graduate Certificate in Business Analytics.

This course has been developed in consultation with industry in response to major global shortages of people with analytics skills, including a predicted shortfall of over 180,000 people with deep analytical skills and five times that number of data management and interpretation skills.

Course aims

A unique feature of the Business Analytics program is the inclusion of studios, where students apply the technical skills they develop onto real-world projects.

Career options

The course is suitable for students from both business and IT backgrounds who seek to upskill and develop the skills required to meet the growth in emerging careers in business analytics. Career options are incredibly varied as virtually every company in every industry now collects huge amounts of data that needs to be interpreted and analysed to inform decision making. Graduates from this program are able to provide valuable insights on matters such as fraud detection, and logistics optimisation through to customer acquisition and retention and demand forecasting.

Course intended learning outcomes

1.1 Apply data analysis techniques to business information to generate knowledge for local and international contexts
2.1 Explain the current assumptions, including the representation of Indigenous peoples implicit in data, and the analytical techniques to enable business decision-making in common problems
3.1 Convey business information clearly and fluently in written and verbal form appropraite for the problem, data and multiple audiences
3.2 Interact with colleagues and stakeholders to work effectively towards agreed outcomes
4.1 Apply professional and research standards and principles of sustainability, ethical and social responsibility as well as Indigenous values as business analysts
5.1 Demonstrate technical and adaptive skills in busineses analytics

Admission requirements

Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised bachelor's degree, or an equivalent or higher qualification, or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrates potential to pursue graduate studies.

Minimum Academic Requirement: The bachelor's degree should be in a related field, within the business or information technology disciplines.

All applicants who do not meet the minimum academic requirement may still be considered on the basis of:

  • a minimum of at least four years full time, or equivalent, relevant work experience.

The relevant work experience must be demonstrated through a C.V. and a Statement of Service, confirming the dates of employment and the position held within the organisation.

The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5, internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64; or CAE: 176-184.

Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.

International students

Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.

Course duration and attendance

The course duration is one session of full-time or one year of part-time study.

Course structure

The course totals 24 credit points and consists of a combination of core and foundation stream subjects.

Students with a business background select STM91345 Foundation in IT stream (Business Analytics) (information technology foundation subjects) and students with information technology background select STM91344 Foundation in Business stream (Business Analytics) (business foundation subjects).
