68204 Biomedical Physics Project

Description

Scientific research brings together the scientific method, knowledge, observations and sound data in order to answer specific questions. This can lead to a deeper understanding of the research question or the development of novel solutions to problems. The subject is designed to enhance students' ability to develop and subsequently undertake a research project in the area of biomedical physics. This subject is a mandatory part of the Bachelor of Biomedical Physics (C10346).

Contribution to the development of graduate attributes

The Faculty of Science lists seven graduate attributes that you will develop during your course at UTS. This subject has the potential link to all UTS graduate attributes, however each research project will be different.The expectation is that all students will develop the following graduate attributes within the context of their research project:


1. Disciplinary knowledge and its appropriate application An understanding of the nature, practice & application of the chosen science discipline. Disciplinary knowledge appropriate to the specific topic will be developed and applied throughout the learning process, and assessed as appropriate in the report and seminar.


2. An enquiry-oriented approach An understanding of the scientific method of knowledge acquisition. Encompasses problem solving, critical thinking and analysis attributes, and the ability to discover new understandings. Enquiry is fundamental to this research project.


3. Professional skills and their appropriate application The ability to acquire, develop, employ and integrate a range of technical, practical and professional skills, in appropriate and ethical ways within a professional context, autonomously and collaboratively and across a range of disciplinary and professional areas (e.g. Time management skills, personal organisation skills, teamwork skills, computing skills, laboratory skills, data handling, quantitative and graphical literacy skills). Professional skills appropriate to the project will be developed throughout the learning experience and are required for successful completion of the assessments.


4. The ability to be a lifelong learner The capacity to engage in reflection and learning beyond formal educational contexts, that is based on the ability to make effective judgments about one’s own work. The capacity to learn in, and from, new disciplines to enhance the application of scientific knowledge and skills in professional contexts. Reflection will be developed through review processes.


6. Communication skills An understanding of the different forms of communication - writing, reading, speaking, listening - including visual and graphical, within science and beyond and the ability to apply these appropriately and effectively for different audiences. These will be developed through regular review processes and assessed in both written and seminar assessments.

Teaching and learning strategies

There are no formal classes for this subject. Learning will be experiential with teaching and guidance provided by the supervisor and their research team. Both students and supervisor have a responsibility to meet regularly to review outcomes against the project plan and to discuss conceptual and technical matters arising. The supervisor and student should meet to review assessment drafts in a timely fashion.


The project can only be conducted following prior negotiation on the part of the student with a UTS staff supervisor with experience relevant to Biomedical Physics, and must include a project plan and timetable. The project may be conducted with a relevant industry partner but the UTS supervisor is ultimately responsible for that relationship and ensuring that the project is feasible and that it can be assessed by UTS staff. Any lab work must have relevant risk management plans in place. The project proposal must be approved by the Program Director.


Students are required to spend at least six hours a week in the practical lab or computer lab on their projects in order to obtain sufficient data to write up their scientific manuscript.


At the conclusion of this subject, the student is responsible for appropriate analysis and critical evaluation of the data or information obtained and presentation of their findings in a formal report, written in the style of a scientific manuscript or report. Students also give a research presentation of their work, in the style of a conference seminar. Variations to assessment are for exceptional circumstances only and must be approved by the Subject Coordinator with due consideration to the nature of the project and equity for all students.


Assessment will be carried out, in consultation with supervisors, by a least one independent person nominated by the Subject Coordinator. If the assessors cannot reach consensus the Subject Coordinator will chair a meeting to resolve the final mark.

Content (topics)

As each project will be different, specific details as to what you will learn cannot be specified. However, you will learn broadly in three areas from undertaking this subject. These are the development of scientific skills and knowledge in the area of your chosen discipline; aptitude and knowledge in generic skills associated with successful management of a professional project; and the skills of reflection, self-assessment and the ability to learn independently.
