Description

The subject describes ways to organise collaborative business processes to facilitate knowledge sharing and innovation within and across business units. Its focus is on teamwork, which has become an ever more important aspect of carrying out tasks as well as building knowledge and expertise within organisations. Ways of organising teams for different business objectives are covered. In addition, virtual teams collaborating across vast distances are using internet technologies to support their work. The subject introduces the ways in which teams function in modern organisations, how businesses can change to support culturally diverse teams, and how systems can enable effective team operation. It focuses on improving the ways people work together, developing trust and designing teams.

Subject learning objectives (SLOs)

Upon successful completion of this subject students should be able to:
1. Define the way collaborative processes are used to create new business solutions that make use of information systems
2. Explain the good properties of collaborative business processes include social networking, knowledge sharing and dynamic processes
3. Demonstrate skills in creating innovative business solutions including brainstorming and idea evaluation
4. Evaluate and implement proposed business solutions

The subject describes collaborative businesses processes. It focuses on the way collaboration can be organized to create innovation business solutions by sharing knowledge between people and businesses. It describes the importance of teamwork in building knowledge and expertise within organizations and use this knowledge in innovative ways. It considers both local and distant or virtual processes. It describes how virtual teams can collaborating across vast distances are using internet technologies to support their work. It describes the ways in which teams function in modern organisations, how businesses can change to support culturally diverse teams, and how systems can enable effective team operation. It focuses on improving the ways people work together, developing trust, designing team. This subject focuses on the role of collaborative business processes in today’s dynamic environment.

Teaching and learning strategies

The subject will be taught using a combination of large lectures and smaller tutorials. The lectures provide the structure of the topic area, discussion of the theory and some practical examples. Tutorials provide an opportunity to discuss ideas, issues and make practical application of the theory, as well as encouraging students to think in a creative manner to solve real world problems. Use is made of the UTS web-based communication tool Canvas, which will be used to share information, provide feedback and encourage interaction between staff and students.
