Description

This subject involves a capstone project that provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate and integrate the professional knowledge and skills that they have acquired through their course. Students work in groups to go through the process of procuring a project from inception to completion and cover the commissioning stages. Students are expected to demonstrate a professional level of preparation, planning, execution, testing and documentation for the project and meet a number of strictly enforced milestones. They need to demonstrate proactive initiatives in overcoming problems associated with the project. The subject brings together the processes of project management as defined by the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) and their interaction in a project life cycle. Project initiation is explored including strategic objectives and justification, stakeholder-needs analysis, and development and evaluation of alternatives. Students address the practical application of project planning, executing, controlling and closing processes. This incorporates the integration of project scope, time, cost, quality, risk, procurement and facilitating processes. Emphasis is placed on effective project teamwork and communication.

Subject learning objectives (SLOs)

On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:

1. demonstrate professional skills and knowledge in the procurement and commissioning of a project
2. demonstrate an understanding of the PMBOK processes and their integration
3. understand the main strategies and processes for effective client and project stakeholder management
4. undertake site assembly, workplace safety and traffic management
5. display an understanding of the typical construction processes associated with projects
6. demonstrate an ability to interpret and use project documentation

Course intended learning outcomes (CILOs)

This subject also contributes to the following Course Intended Learning Outcomes:

  • Apply a variety of communication skills and technologies in professional contexts. (C.1)
  • Work effectively in project teams in professional contexts. (C.2)
  • Apply the body of knowledge underpinning construction project management practice. (P.2)

Contribution to the development of graduate attributes

The term CAPRI is used for the five Design, Architecture and Building faculty graduate attribute categories where:

C = communication and groupwork

A = attitudes and values

P = practical and professional

R = research and critique

I = innovation and creativity.

Course intended learning outcomes (CILOs) are linked to these categories using codes (e.g. C-1, A-3, P-4, etc.).

Teaching and learning strategies

The learning activities in this subject involve a variety of weekly lectures, team-based workshops online learning, independent research, project based activities, and presentations by industry professionals. A major construction project will be used as a case study.

Emphasis is placed on students pre-reading of subject material with lectures providing an overview of this material and discussion of key issues. Regular guest presentations from industry professionals will be utilised to demonstrate current practical applications of subject content in the context of the case study. The program utilises pre-reading, a single major case study, student group work, student presentations, and experiential exercises to link theory and application. Independent research will involve students proactively resolving issues associated with the case study project.

Students are supported through the use of UTS Online to provide a variety of teaching and learning materials. Students will have several opportunities to receive feedback during the subject. The feedback provided will vary in form, purpose, and in its degree of formality:

Formative feedback will be provided during the learning process, typically provided verbally by the subject's teaching staff. It will address the content of work and a student's approach to learning, both in general and more specific ‘assessment orientated’ terms. It is designed to help students improve their performance in time for the submission of an assessment item. For this to occur students need to respond constructively to discussions, presentations, and experiential exercises.

Summative feedback is provided in written form with all assessed work. Summative feedback focuses on assessment outcomes. It is used to indicate how successfully a student has performed in terms of specific assessment criteria. Presentation and report writing assessments are utilised to assess a student’s understanding of subject content.

The content of this subject covers the following topics:

  • PMBOK Competency Units/Knowledge Areas
  • Project planning and client strategic objectives
  • Client and stakeholder management
  • Identifying, documenting, managing and controlling project scope
  • Project planning, documentation, executing, controlling and closing processes
  • Primary project objectives (scoping, time, cost and quality)
