97801 Italian Language and Culture 1

8cp; 2 x 2hr tutorials/week; availability: exchange and study abroad students with faculty approval

This subject is designed to provide students who have no prior knowledge of the Italian language with basic reading, listening, speaking and writing skills. It also facilitates an understanding of and engagement with the sociocultural contexts in which the language is used. Students take an active part in learning activities to practice and consolidate their language skills with their peers. This subject prioritises an intercultural approach where students should demonstrate intercultural knowledge (recognising diverse cultural practices of their own and target cultures), skills to discover and explore dynamic representations of their own and others' cultural practices, and skills to interpret, relate and move between the language and practices of the two or more cultures in focus.
