97201 Japanese Language and Culture 1

8cp; 2 x 2hr tutorials/week; availability: exchange and study abroad students with faculty approval


This subject is designed to provide students who have no prior knowledge of the Japanese language with basic reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. It also facilitates understanding of and engagement with sociocultural contexts in Japan relevant to in-country study.

While focusing primarily on the development of speaking and listening skills, the subject also provides a working knowledge of the hiragana and katakana scripts and approximately 50 kanji. Discussions of sociolinguistic and cross-cultural issues are an integral part of the language lessons. Students take active part in learning activities to practise and consolidate their language skills with their peers.
