96726 Caring for an Older Person

This subject is designed to develop students' knowledge and skills in caring for and/or managing the older person with a chronic illness and/or geriatric syndromes in primary, secondary and tertiary health-care settings. The rapidly ageing population brings a plethora of opportunities and challenges within the legislative and policy frameworks that support care of the older person which this subject aims to explore for nurses and carers. A particular emphasis is placed on evidence-based assessment, care and management of the older person using a person-centred approach. Learning strategies are incorporated on developing resilience and wellbeing when providing care for older people and their families, with the aim of fostering a supportive workplace culture and a satisfying career in the field of ageing.
