92974 Introduction to Biostatistics

This purpose of this subject is to provide students with an understanding of statistical reasoning and its application to epidemiological studies and the ability to read and critically evaluate the statistical section of journal articles. This subject introduces basic statistical concepts of: data presentation; probability distributions; confidence intervals and hypothesis testing; sample size and power; analysis of variance; correlation; and non-parametric tests. The subject does not focus on computing skills, but instead on interpretation of output and the appropriate use of methods of analyses. At completion of this subject, students are able to select the correct statistical analyses appropriate to research questions and are able to contribute to study design by undertaking power and sample size calculations.
