Research methods introduces students to the major themes of scientific research. The material is presented within the broad context of critical professional skills required for a successful career in a research-oriented field of science. In this subject, students develop skills to: locate, understand and evaluate primary research articles; write in scientific styles and formats; and present and interpret scientific data. Additional topics covered in this subject include the regulatory framework in which research occurs, science communication practices and research ethics. Students are encouraged to be self-motivated, work in a timely fashion and understand the importance of professional behaviour. The subject also provides an opportunity for students to interact with research active academics within the university.
