Description

In this subject, students survey key moments in media technology history, consider the various critical perspectives through which media changes are analysed, and embed contemporary media phenomena within political, economic and cultural contexts. Central to these discussions is an appreciation of how technological disruptions have challenged contemporary communications, insofar as the production, distribution and consumption of media has been radically changed over the last few decades. Students consider how processes of globalisation, digital convergence, individualisation and interactivity have profoundly affected the distribution of media power, and in turn triggered seminal, transformative changes for myriad institutions, concepts and practices, including: the public sphere; identity (personal and collective); civic engagement; political discourse; and consumer culture. By considering contemporary examples and case studies, conducting in-depth academic research, and delivering multimedia presentations, students both appreciate the critical ironies and tensions inherent in 21st media, and explore the attendant possibilities and opportunities.
