Requisite(s): 24 credit points of completed study in spk(s): MAJ10046 Journalism Major OR 24 credit points of completed study in spk(s): MAJ10020 Journalism major BAComm
Anti-requisite(s): 58211 Specialist Reporting, Audiences and Interactivity

In this subject, students work rostered shifts in the Central News Journalism Lab in a simulated newsroom environment. Under the guidance of editors, students deepen their understanding of news values and audiences, pitch and produce stories to deadline and build a portfolio of content. In addition to their Central News shifts, students work in teams to understand the theory and practice of collaborative journalism. Each team selects a news theme (e.g. environment, health, technology, arts, sports, business or politics) and produces multiplatform content in video, audio and written formats for their own purpose-built interactive news publication that targets a specific, niche audience. Through their Central News shifts and the production of an online news publication, students gain a critical understanding of participation (professional and non-professional) as an emerging core practice of journalism.
